2. Resourcefulness

How can our projects celebrate resourcefulness?

Buildings use many resources in their construction, operation, maintenance and end of life. At a time when we need to meet our Paris Agreements of emissions reductions, how can we creatively design and construct buildings that are positively informed by using locally available resources efficiently and with minimal environmental impact? How can we minimize waste, and reduce energy consumption throughout their entire life cycle? How can we demonstrate that the built environment can contribute significantly while providing beautiful places for us to live, work, learn and play?

To achieve this, let us consider how we can:

2.1   … achieve net zero carbon in our project’s life cycle?

Using fabric first and renewable energy approaches, minimise and then offset the carbon emissions associated with construction, operation, maintenance, and end of life.

2.2   … incorporate lean design for optimal resource use?

By prioritising sufficiency of space and design, and minimising waste, the aim is to use resources judiciously to reduce environmental impact and optimize performance.

2.3   … balance economic measures of cost and value?

Make informed decisions that consider the upfront costs and affordability of construction with the long-term value that is provided, delivering quality over quantity.
