Creating prosperous climate resilient cities and regions

All sessions will be recorded so you can catch up as and when you can.

1A | Local Governments demonstrating leadership

Mayor Karen Redman - Town of Gawler, South Australia - all things local government, the closest to people and leaders in climate action. PVs on buildings, better lights, EV fleet, net zero emissions. Many have declared a climate emergency and joined with others to do great things. Will launch the 2021 Local Government Report and all that they will be doing.

Stephanie Ziersch - Principal, Stephanie Ziersch Consulting comparing this session.

  • Mayor Karen Redman - Town of Gawler, South Australia

2nd term as Mayor, from a health background. Gawlor was the first council to Declare.

as we move into critical decade, LGAs make the perfect partners to deliver NZE well before 2050. Are demonstrating climate leadership in many ways. With IPCC Report they are increasing ambition. Demonstrate by Declares and community action.

Gawlor has a hot dry mediteranean climate. Preparing a sustainability action plan. Youth have a huge voice in all areas. Know they will have amore frequent droughts, and the 3 rivers will ensure more flooding. Bushfires are sadly on their doorstep as well. Recover is costly and slow. 2 x tree canopy + cooler microclimates. Affordable renewable energy is a pre-requisite for energy efficient AC. Looking at helping supply 2nd had affordable EVs. Put up a motion for a better price for renewable energy put back into the grid.

  • Local Government Review 2021 - in 2017 Ironbark Sustainability + ICLEI prepared an ambitious review which has been well used for policy and tool development since then. 2021 review is an update showing progress made and opportunities to do more to keep temp rises within 1.5 degrees. Only 10% felt they were prepared for what is ahead - different to what councils report they are doing.

  • 67% community emissions reduction targets.

  • These commitments will bring Australia 96%of the way to Paris agreements.

  • Launch of report with all its information. https://ironbarksustainability.app.box.com/s/p6ylewyv92c6rkfh2k44vwjr9b6r9ltc

  • John Mabb - Senior Climate officer, Logan City Council - set up SEQ Climate Resilient Alliance to review, engage, educate and develop framework for engagement to move from inward focus to outward community

  • Nick Tobin - Managing Director, Networked Urban Solutions Pty Ltd on behalf of Gwydir Shire Council - well placed in central NSW near Moree REZ and on highway. Moving from reliance on just agriculture to other options. Living Classroom project - quality food and good plant, soil and human health and demonstrating circular economy ideas.

  • Victoria Hart - Sustainable Built Environment Unit Manager, City of Moreland - Zero Carbon Moreland - Sustainable Transport initiatives, started in 2012 with EV trial grant. Key pillar with 100% renewable energy, circular economy and transport. 30% fleet now EV + 16 free EV charging stations + cycling infrastur

  • Ben Leonello - Environment and Sustainability Officer, City of Mitcham - permeable pavement car-park trial dealing with need to water absortion and heat island effect. 3 options trialled and evaluated. Showed they can cool faster, less COs emissions, collection and storage of water and healthier trees and plants.

Alexi Lynch - Business Manager, Ironbark Sustainability - wrap up

1B | State governments driving renewable powered futures

John Grimes - CEO, Smart Energy Council - interesting session lined up. Interested in electrifying everything, everywhere :-) And ensuring this is powered by renewable sources. Processes can also take CO2 emissions out of agriculture. This will be all about the states. Why are they important? Feds saying we can either have a safe economy or action on climate change. Wrong, willfull and damaging. Also they are taking actions to out barriers in the way of renewable energy, including lots of taxes while subsidising coal. The good news is that the States and Territories are moving. They are responsible for power and after a tense build up, they have broken away from the feds and doing their own thing.

Georgie Skipper - Chief of Corporate & Government Affairs, Sun Cable

1D | Common approaches to reducing Scope 3 emissions

Tennant Reed - Principal Advisor - National Public Policy, AiGroup - scope 3 emissions contains the most interesting issues and biggest challenges we face today. They involve the emissions higher up your supply chain, and those lower down the chain who use the things you make. Eg export of fossil fuels to other places are someone’s scope 3 emissions. By their nature they take place out of your control - what can you do when you are trying to achieve business net zero emissions?

Jorge Chapa - Head of Market Transformation, Green Building Council of Australia

Dr Susanne Etti - Environmental Impact Specialist, Intrepid Travel

Nick Palousis - Managing Director, 2XE
